> The Official Mac V Windows Thread!
Bookmark topic
Right it is about time we had a dedicated mac v windows thread. Please can i state right from the start that this is a discussion/debate and should not turn into a flaming war, there will be no this is shit, they are crap or anything like that. If that starts to happen then i will ask for this thread to be locked straight away.
We are all adults here and should be able to have a rational and healthy debate amongst friends. Please post your feelings here about the two and what you think is good about the operating system you use and why, back up your arguments.
I would like to educate people about macs along with other uses such as luke and jools, i feel people just dismiss macs because they do not want to face up to the fact that they really are that good.
I will start: After using a pc for many years and keeping it up to date and having various programs for protection (recommended by professionals in the field) i was still getting errors, spam, viruses, you name it i got it.
I had always admired macs and decided to get one which i did and i have never ever looked back, it was the best decision i ever made. I have not had one problem with it.
Peope will say oh i cannot use this program in a mac, but i can honestly say i can run every program i had on my pc on my mac and much much more. If i ever do come across a program that i cant i know that i can have both systems running on the same machine, can windows do this, NO!
Also everyone is aware of the fact that vista will require most people to upgrade there systems, more ram is needed and a bigger hard drive and maybe even better graphics card, i am safe in the knowledge that my macbook which will be 1 year old when vista is released and has 512ram and 80gb hard drive will be able to use both leapard and vista with ease no need to go and upgrade my system.
Also people say that macs are too expensive the macbooks are £800, were can you get a laptop that is that thin and sexy that can run two operating systems together on the same machine, nowhere.
They are my points please do not flame, discuss and have fun.

Vista is fueled by companies.
Most people already have good pcs, and the only way to get them to upgrade is by force.
So MS become sloppy, unefficient, and demand higher specced machines.
The funny thing is, their 'status' program, that checks your pc to let you know if it's fine or not, was flawed and gave even strong pc's LOW ratings.

I just feel that because ms have such a huge share in the market nothing will change but with the release of the new intel macs that is now a definate possibility.
Microsoft are leading people astray and offering bad service imho, when you buy a pc you expect it to work well as you are paying good money for it, i feel with mac that you get great service from the start, you can just open it up and go fir it straight away.
With a pc you have to set it up then get various anit virus, ad-aware programs etc etc, why should you have to pay out more more to keep it safe?

Right as I think I am probally the macfan boy on esato I have to say one thing you said there was wrong, even on macs you will still get spam, I et it all the time althoguh I have no idea why (probally me giving my email addresses away to easily).
I love my macs, I buy lots of them nowdays (just upgraded friday in fact).
I second Miss C's words about macs not being able to run all the programs, I myself was a heavy pc user up till last august when i cnaged and there was only one program which I could not "obtain" for my my mac and that was turbolister (ebays listing program) and untill recently have been using a pc to run that one program (what a waste of £450) I now bought a copy of garage sale for about £14 quid, so hardly going to break the bank. Again as Miss C says if you cant run it just boot xp on there for backup?
One point that annoyes me is everyone says macs are expensive, although I believe they actually only have a small profit margin of 22% which is quite small and apple give students a 7% discount on their laptops. People often forget what their paying for, your getting a lappy that runds a 2ghz intel core duo for £850 and its also small tin and very well designed.
Also although this goes for a small segment lots of people say they dont like the ipod because its a ipod and now a fashion symbol, I gota say thats a great achievemnt from apple to have one of their products reconised almost anywhere in the world, not even sony could say that. But the whole reason its a fashion symbol is because its so damn good, if it wanst no oen would buy them!
I know that didnt come out in much order, but im just waiting for some more input till I start going

your a god dam genious, tha is such a good point, although there are many free software programs to gaurd your pc the oones which are recomended all cost a heft sum. I like your way of thinking there, with a windows pc you really dont get much with it (like the apple adds saidI guess) but with a mac you get ilife and that can keep me amused for a good few hours.
Also id like to bring up the topic of wirless networking, when i owned a pc I had lots of problems with wep passwords for no real reason, but when i got a mac I think it took me about 1 min to work out the networking, and before that I had hardly used macs appart for soem video editing

Sorry luke i meant to write spyware there, i got abit carrried away typing lol. Those are some good points. It is also very well know that a pc can have a 3ghz processor and a mac say 1.8ghz and the mac will run quicker do not ask me why it just will. People think omg i am going to downgrade to a slower processor which is just not true.
I just don't think people give them a chance, i mean solidsingh and brownlad for example you sold macs after what 1 day i think? You really need to give it a couple of weeks no-one is saying it is easy to switch it is a scary thought but you need those few weeks to get to grips with things etc etc.

I've been a pc user for years and have never felt the need to use a mac. I have never been infected with viruses or spyware....nor do i have "sufficient" protection in the form of antivirus programs. I just do not feel comfortable with another Os! I love knoppix though!! But thats a different topic...

you dont have to pay more for good anti virus, i use avast which is free and im virus free
also wireless networking is easy on windows as it is on mac, ive used both and they both took the same amount of time to set up
i think the main reason why there arent many viruses for macs is because not many people have them so if someone wanted to cause mass destruction, it would be better to write viruses for PCs because of the high percentage of people that use them.
also macs are crap for running games, i would like to see a macbook pro run counter strike source
edit: when i had a mac i used it for a few days and i liked the way it worked, especially how when u press on of the keys it makes all the windows small so you can select the one you need quite easily. i did get to grips with it but i jus didnt like it as much as my pc

aye. I must admit I originally bought my mac to sell

but I turned it on which was my big mistake as I loved using it, things were so simple. In fact I recently converted my father to a full on mac user the other week and he asked me how do I send a picture via email I just said try draging and droping it into mail and when he did this he was really surprised how stupidly simple it was.
Regards speed Its true my old mac a 1ghz 512mb and 4200 rpm hd was faster then my 1.8ghz, 768mb, 7200rpm pc. The reason behind this was the structure of the os I believe, jools knows more about this then me
