Having just returned from Amsterdam for the weekend, I have come across a problem. When I arrived, my phone located the Vodafone NL network no problem. When I tried calling a couple of mates, my phone would not connect to them, and then I received a text from Vodafone, telling me I had to use the international format, ie 0044. The lads i was away with, could just select a number from their phonebook with no problems. Can anyone shed any light on this subject.
I am on Vodafone, and am using a nokia 6630.

I'm on vodafone too and in every country I have been to I have always had to dial the full international code
the exception to this is if you are dialling a number local to the country you are in, in which case an area code is all that is required
btw, I prefer to use + rather than 00 because not all countries use 00, .e.g Australia which uses 0011. The GSM system converts the + into the international dialing code for the country you are in.

i had sometimes problems with "+" at sending sms, with "00" workde fine, so i use usually "00" with all my nrs, actually all my numbers are in international way in my fonebook, so i call inland also in that format.

I can imagine that you were possibly in one country using a message centre from another country and the international dialling codes for those two countries were different... but thats just speculation
@pmerryman, perhaps your mates stored their numbers in international format already?

I am pretty sure that they were using o2. Quite bizarre that one network works and another doesn't!!!!!! Thanks for your help also. Quite annoying when you have had a few lagers, and then your trying to edit the numbers and put 0044 in there.

might be in the next future the european networks would work much better, when roaming, ther are already news, that they wanna reduce the roaming costs or even delete those. it would be really great, cos ppl would make much more calls in the eu when roaming and that would effect positiv ( hoepfully ) such call bugs aswell.

anyway,
here is the o2 "Using your mobile abroad" guide where it also mentions
Whenever you use your mobile abroad, you should always use the international dialling code of the country you are calling. So key: + then the country code, then the area code (without the 0), then the phone number
so its appears that o2 is no different... perhaps, just ask your mates what they have stored

@masseur, I did ask, and they said that they didn't change anything on their phones, so I just assumed it was the nework.
