I just sent the following to SE support Sweden. Don't know if anyone
there listens, but I am curious if anyone else experiences the same
problems.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Among all the bugs of this buggy phone, the most annoying to me is one
in the IMAP implementation: Although I don't subscribe to any other
folder than the Inbox, the phone appears to check for new messages in
all folders. At least that's what my packet sniffer tells me.
Including the one receiving tens of spam messages each hour, the one
receving tens of virus messages each day, and the one receiving
50-some mailinglist messages each day. The phone appears to become so
busy that it just hangs whenever I ask it to fetch new E-mail.

My main reason for buying this phone was to be able to keep an eye on
my Inbox when away from the computer. I'm not interested in all the
other mail folders.

Please fix, or tell me what I do wrong. I have the latest firmware
upgrade as of today (2006-07-01) according to your update program.

An I have several hundred mail folders, with about 400000 messages in
them. I don't want my phone to deal with that, just the inbox.

It's annoying I know.

I noticed that the phone was generating several tens of kB of traffic each time I checked for new mail, so today I dug out ethereal, turned off TLS, and checked out the session. The phone requests a list of all the folders on the server and then checks for new mail in every one, even though I haven't subscribed to any of them on the phone.

Of course, the worst problem with the IMAP client at the moment (IMHO) is that with IMAP IDLE switched on you can't download any messages. All you get is an error ...

SE support simply tells me that my claims are not true. Even though Ethereal confirms that the problem is still there with the latest (as of this post) firmware version.

I had to remove the battery to make the phone stop downloading message headers. After I powered it on again, the phone told me I had 667 unread messages. I could not find a way to mark them as read, since I did not subscribe to the mail folders containing the unread messages.

If you, like me, consider buying this phone to read E-mail, I suggest you wait for a while. Alternatively, go for another phone. This phone appears to be more buggy than the C64 games I wrote as a teenager in the mid 80's.

I like the size, the keyboard, and everything except the software, though. So I just keep hoping that some future upgrade will make this thingy just what I want it to be.

I have been having a similar problem with my IMAP server. I ask the M600 to check mail using an SSL connection. It connects and after about a minute beeps with a mail notification signal. It then continues to get more than 5 meg of data and then completely freezes. The first few times I pulled the battery to reset, but then I figured out that holding down the power switch for 10 seconds of so does switch off the phone.

I believe my problem is that I have about a hundred folders on the IMAP server and it is checking all of them but have not had the time to confirm this. The number of unread messages does agree roughly with the total number of unread message - including those in unsubscribed spam folders.

Any solutions would be much appreciated. FYI, a colleague is using ProfiMail on a P910 to access the same IMAP server and this appears to work fine, but unfortunatley ProfiMail is not available for the M600.

It easily resolved I think.

If you don't wont the Spam folder to be synced or others you can remove them from the list of folders.

With my AOL IMAP, I added etc and then removed whatever folders I needed synced. If you need instructions, let me know.

Could you please stop trolling every thread in this forum? We get it! You don't like Sony Ericssons smartphones! You prefer Nokias! Now, if you have nothing to contribute - get out!

Did anybody find a solution to the checking of unsusbscribed IMAP folders?

I used to use IMAP on the P910i and it only checvked the INBOX so something has been done to this software to make it check every folder out there.

To make matters worse, they have removed the older ability to leave POP3 messages on the server so one can't even fall back on POP3 to get the INBOX only messages.

I have a p910a, does anyone have IMAP with SSL running effectively on their P910a?

or even with out SSL?

I couldn't get it to work. It just hangs when it is checking messages with IMAP.

So I've fallen back to POP. This seems to mark my messages as read on the server just because they were downloaded (but not read). Does anyone know any way around this?

thanks,
Paul T
