Hi,
Is there a way to tell from the K800i display if you are in a 3G service area (similar to how you can see GSM/GPRS)>

yes, there is a 3g icon which appears next to the GPRS indicator.
Its picture is the first icon listed in the icons section of the manual (about page 14)
in case you don't have that handy... here 'tis
