All,
i recently got w700i, well i was thinking that its the same as w800i except for the colour and the memory stick, but found that AF is aslo missing in w700i
Now is it possible to hv AF by upgrading the fw ? or the hware on w700i itself doesnt support AF ?
thanks
cjaar

The w700 has a different camera module that does not have the mechanical parts for autofocus.

does autofocus really have such an impact on camera pics ?

It should have an impact in photos. a better focus, a clearer pic. Without AF all objects are captured the same way regardless of distances, so closer or farther objects in the picture may appear blurred sometimes. So in theory I think it does affect picture qualitly vastly.

sometimes yes.
without, you have a fixed focus at some predefined focal distance, and pics are only going to be completely sharp when taken from that exact focal distance.
with AF you have more variable focal distance, and can focus on different spots, thus deside for instance if you want a sharp foreground, with unsharp background or you can focus on the background and create unsharp foreground, or something more general in between.

I didn't realise that AF was hardware. Is this correct? I always thought it was software.

It's a little from column A, a little from column B. There has to be hardware to move the lenses back and forth to change the actual focus, but the software determines if the picture is in focus or not.

Makes sense! I wonder how the moving parts will age over time?

k750 autofocus uses a hydrostatic fluid rather than a mechanical drive mechanism to move the lense back and forth. It should be quite durable.
