settings -> connectivity -> mobile networks -> GSM/3G networks

choose GSM and 3G or GSM only

Would this have an influence in making the battery last longer?

well, the section of the manual where you find this command also says

"Your phone also switches autmoatically between GSM and 3G (UMTS) networks depending on availability. Some network operators allow you to switch networks manually, as searching for unavailable networks consumes battery power"

I want to do the opposite - turn off GSM and run on only 3G. This worked fine on the Symbian-based M600, but the K800 lacks the option
