First of all a quick introduction: I broke my P910i but had insurance. Because the P990i wasn't out yet, I got (yes, i know, I'm going to be flamed), the Nokia N80.
Don't get me wrong, it's a nice phone, and it's tiny. HOWEVER. There is a really big reason that the N80 was released so early compared to the 990i: Software.
Modern Symbian phones aren't a walk in the park to program. The OS complexity could be compared to that of Windows or OS X in many ways, yet without the niceities of high-level programming languages. What point am I getting at? The Nokia N80 is FULL, and I mean full, of software bugs. This thing appears to have a mind of it's own. You want to listen to music while browsing the web? Be prepared for the track to randomly stop playing for no reason at all. On the phone to someone? Be prepared for bits of the screen to disappear or go green and fuzzy.
This is a nice phone, however, the software sucks. I remember getting the P800 as it was released. I'm used to being an early adopter, and having to deal with some instability, and while it wasn't perfect, it didn't often fail me. The P910i was perfect. Next to no crashes at all, and oft-released firmware I could upgrade myself.
The N80 on the other hand... Software that might as well have been written by an arthritic monkey, packaged in a nice form factor.
Oh, and firmware upgrades? Erm, yeah... you have you have to send your phone off to Nokia, which I can't do as my business and work in general would grind to a halt.
A note to Sony Ericsson: I don't care if you release the P990i three years late, because it will be bug-free, won't break, and will be tested thoroughly before release, the meaning of which Nokia seem to be unaware of. To those of you winging about the delays, quit it. The wait will be worth it.

I dont know about that. Sony Ericsson has delayed many phones over time and they still came out with a ton of bugs. The only promising thing I see about this situation is that you can tell they fixed most of the bugs in the m600 so the p990 shouldn't have that many bugs when released.

The sole reason I can stick with SE phones is that the firmware is user upgradeable. I do not have to send/go to the "NEAREST DUMB NOKIA CENTER" to get it upgraded by fools and axxes. I do not have to explain those useless nokia tech support guys "WHY ON EARTH I NEED THE FIRMWARE UPDATE?"

Go to hell Nokia. I have had the Nokia 6600, Nokia 6630, 6680, N70 and N90 and all through the phones they could not even fix the blurry wallpaper bug (The wallpaper selected would be blurry and have 1 pixel white border which looked extremely ugly). All the phones were extremely buggy and till they became stable they were a year old. So it is best to avoid NOKIA. for me at least

The real benefit will when we see the successor of the P990 and the N80; by that time Nokia and SE will have a very stable platform. I have been very impressed with my M600i - you need to use it for a few weeks before appreciate the design and integration of UIQ3 with the hardware. Life can only get better now

Just look at the K800i, which is nearly bug-free at launch day. (yes, it has some minor bugs, but nothing near the number of bugs we saw on phones like K700i, K750i at launch day). Well done SE!

Hope to see the P990i equally bug-free at launch day in the next couple of weeks.

I really think SE are doing all they can to give the customers their symbian flagship phone bug-free. The P990 just deserves to be given out that way. cheres

And the main problem with the P990 is wifi. It does not work. Se have always had a weak point in radio links which need lots and lots and even more lots of testing under different rf combination. They battled with edge , 3g , quad band, and now wifi . Any radio communication technician/ingenier knows what it takes to have so many different frq. working in harmony in such close proximity. Try using your wifi and bluetooth dongles while glued to each other and you will see what I mean. Now dial and hold the cell next to the other 2 and check your data speed. It may work or it may not. Yes nokia make it work (barely) but is 5x + bigger then se. From all the small cell companies I take my hat off to se just because they 'give it a shot' . So patience please, patience. It will come :-) -eventualy - This message was posted from a Nokia
