My existing chess game only occupies a small portion of the screen and is more a test of eye-sight than chess playing ability, so if anyone has one that will work i would be very grateful

Have you tried chess by cellufun. They have support for many models. And the game is excellent!
www.cellufun.com or wap.cellufun.com

I did not see k800 in the list of supported models for cellufuns chess. Great that it works. They will probably update soon since many new models have been released. Check for update time to time and you will get the fullscreen one.

Is there a way to get their games without connecting to their wap site?
I checked their site, but couldn't find anything obvious.

guys - I'm one of the founders of Cellufun -- look for me under chessaddict.
All our games are free and please go ahead and download from wap.cellufun.com
You can actually try any of the games online using the simulator
And btw, while the big strength of our game is that you can play other people online in real-time or PBM mode, it can also offer you a hell of a challenge, with the AI playing at Grandmaster strengtgh. We beat every other mobile chess game -- see the review here:
http://www.quicklybored.com/?p=202
All of our games support 500 plus phones -- basically any web connected J2ME phone.
thanks
