> IMSI error?
Bookmark topic
My wife told me when she got up that a girl at work had a problem with her phone, in that every time it was turned on it said 'IMSI error', or 'IMSI failiure' and told her to turn the phone off. Apparently the phone is 'about 6 years old, large and black'!
She's on O2 pay as you go, not sure of the age of the sim, I'd imagine the same as the 'black' phone! Unfortunately this woman isn't on tonight by the sounds of things so can't give any more details about the phone as yet, probably on old Nokia brick!
I feel I should know the answer to this one, but what is the IMSI number? Has this girl gotten this confused with the IMEI number? Answers on a postcard please! Or failing that, just post here

the IMSI number is used to identify the subscriber... it's usually 15 digits long. The first three are the country code (MCC), the next three (two in Europe) are the network number (MNC) and the last digits are the MSIN number which identifies the user within the network.
the IMSI number is stored in the sim card, so it has really nothing to do with the phone... so it might be a sim card problem... or just that the phone is too old

is it a new sim card, or is that also six years old?

Not sure to be honest, just going on info I got off the better half. I'd guess that the sim was probably as old as the phone. Apparently the phone isn't used that often, I suspect the sim hasn't moved from it's slot in 6 years! I wonder if cleaning the sim and contacts would help? I might suggest that!

IIRC, this problem is with one of the old O2 sim cards that used to come with some philips I phones and a motorola one. If she used to have free calls to a landline, then she hasnt got much chance apart form buying a new sim card from o2... they will know everything about it, she wont have the free landline service anymore, O2 finished that one off ages ago.... wish i could help more, but work has drained me :S

This is a problem with the old phillips 'savvy' phones or sometimes called 'c12'. These were handsets where the sim and the phone were apparantly locked into each other so you couldnt use one without the other. Some services included free calls to 1 landline number which had to be registered with bt.
o2 recently sent out letters to customers who were registered with them on the old system to tell them that they were going to discontinue the old service and that their sim cards will cease to work in their handsets on a particular date.
The only way around it is for the customer to buy an o2 sim card and register it and then giving o2 the details of the old sim which they can then transfer the number and the credit across. By doing this the customer retains the number and sim card credit but unfortunatly loses the 'special' services such as the free calls.
