In the US there are two 3G systems, Verizon's EVDO and Cingular's UMTS (not sure about T-mobile) based system. But please note there are no SE phones that work on EVDO or on the US UMTS bands, which are different from those in Europe. Also I understand in the US the GSM cell phones companies use EDGE, which can give download speed around a maximum of 115kbps. Again neither the M600 of the P990 can make use of EDGE.
Hopefully a member from the US could say a bit more about T-mobile's plans for UMTS.

At the momenet, T-Mobile in the USA only offers EDGE. However, on August 9th, the FCC is having an auction for bandwidth frequency licenses which will include 3G. I have read T-Mobile will be a strong bidder in this auction so that they can develop 3G to compete with Cingular. With any luck, they will acquire a license to develop UMTS on the 2100mhz frequency.
As you can see, the US has an ass-backwards system which makes early adopters suffer with GPRS/EDGE.
