you may change the start up. It's called "user greeting" in setting->display. But i don't know how to change the shut down..

A post here somewhere says recharging the phone and removing the battery while charging will do it. Someone did confirm it, but I haven't tried it.
Try searching for Orange and/or shutdown

You are right. only screensaver support animated gif.
