> M600i: How to reduce email traffic
Bookmark topic
Hi all,
I have to use a volume based tarif (150 MB/month for 20 EUR, E-Plus Germany). Apparently German telcos don't think that they should offer larger/less expensive packages or flatrates, so I have to find ways to minimize my email traffic.
Using pop email access (scheduled download each 15 minutes) I have lots of small data transmissions below 10k. E-Plus thinks that they can set the smallest amount of a data transmission to 100k, so I have (in a worst case scenario) 10 times the traffic on my invoice that I really had.
My questions: Is imap idle more efficient in terms of traffic? I have read that it has to send a heartbeat every 30 Minutes, but since I use imap idle on my phone the "globe" symbol for data transmission on the top status row is always on (but doesn't flicker). The traffic counter of the M600 shows very little traffic. It would even help if there wouldn't be a disconnecting of the data connection, in order to prevent such small data transmission below 10k. Is it possible to hold the data connection until traffic has reached at least 100k? What about battery life?
What is your Best Practice to have nearly real time email service and being efficient?
Thanks in advance!

If you're using the Dataviz RoadSync (ActiveSync) client, here is an excellent article that discusses MSFT Direct Push e-mail with a heartbeat and data usage associated with it. While the article directly references Windows Mobile 5 with AKU2, I would think data usage with Dataviz's RoadSync client would be similar.

I hope that helps--good luck!

Thanks for the link, interesting read, but I use the standard message app with IMAP idle activated.

I use it a lot for both browsing and downloading e-mail.
It compresses pages and e-mail, and you even can download pics with a compression ratio you choose.
