The before and after shots that you posted are two different photos as far as I can tell. Is it really possible to get rid of people so successfully for free? What do they get out of it?

I agree they are too different pictures...
I know people who get paid thousands to do photoshop work for models etc, removing people from pictures is nigh impossible, they have no idea what it behind them so you'd never ever get a true image.
the clouds were a good spot, however look at the position of the bench on the left hand side of the picture.... time has passed and the camera has moved before slightly between the capturing of the 2 images

well about the bench ... i wanted to remark it but it can be a case of zooming in on the picture ... wasn't sure ... if you look at the pavement you can see the same thing ... they'r closer

Sorry, my bad. In fact in the original article it said that users would have to send
two photos of the same area. One in which you can see the areas behind the people. That's what the two photos were. Although, I don't see the point of having people removed anymore if you already have a tourist free photo.
