I developed the same problem as everyone else regarding the sony ericsson k800i and not being able to send outgoing email via the email client. I wanted to use ntlworld.com and set everything up first manually and then from the sony website to find that no matter what I did nothing fixed the outgoing problem thorugh o2.co.uk. I spent 5 days with carphonewarehouse data support team being told it was a network problem and then on to o2 who said it was a carphonewarehouse problem and then went on to blame the software on the handset. I can safely say it is none of the above although it is an o2 problem.
The Fix - its simple. first log onto http://www.o2.co.uk set up a free o2 email account. keep the details handy. In your already installed email account on your phone. got to settings - advanced - go to user name. put in the user name provided by o2, example "bla@o2.co.uk" save and go to password, enter password of the new email account. save and exit. outgoing mail goes and no more silly messages stating that you have supplied incorrect user name or password. only 5 days it took to solve this problem. hope this all helps. for other networks I would suggest you set up their free email service and apply the settings in the same way. not tried others but its worth a go.

Really five days. I just set mine up in five mins. As I wanted to check email deletion to answer a question in another thread.

But glad you've got it sorted, and hopefuly this info will help others. Well done.

do you know what the server settings would be for a hotmail addy ? is it even doable on the K800i with hotmail ? or will I need a gmail or yahoo mail account ? I dont want to make an o2 one as I cant be bothered to inform everyone of a new email address

hi again. you dont actually use o2 email to send your mail. its just giving the phone the settings it needs to stop refusing sending outgoing email.
so it fills in the password and the user name but your email will be sent through your own isp, the only reason you set up an o2 account is to get a user and password to fill in the advanced section of your email settings. hope that is clearer.

OK I see what you mean. Now understand why it was hard to set up. I wouldn't of thought of that.

as far as im aware no. Hotmail uses http adddress and not imap or pop, so at one time you could access from say outlook, but they stopped the service about a year ago. You cant see their free adds on your phone, so no advertising, no money made. Yahoo, lycos, o2 and so on they all have pop email. sorry. You can access hotmail though through o2 active at their cheaper rates. means going online but its not charged per meg but on per page. check the cost before using but I think its about 1p a page or something like that the last time i looked.
cheers

I think this is the same for all email accounts on O2 - has always been the way from what I've read and experienced. You are sending via o2 smtp it's just that in your email address you supplied in the settings is applied as the sender and return to address.

The current issue with the K800i and O2 was related to them not updating their server security certificates. We had the same mess up with the T68 years ago.
