Drop it down the stairs a couple of times, then get a local computer repair guy (like me!) to write you a letter on headed paper stating that they've examined the laptop and in their opinion it is beyond economical repair. They might charge you for doing this, but it shouldn't be much (I charge £15 for an insurance write-off letter).

Just make sure that the way you damage it is covered by the warranty and that the computer guy is prepared to speak to them on the phone if necessary.

I know that this works fine with insurance companies but I've never done one for somebody with an extended warranty rather than third party insurance cover so I can't be 100% sure

I'll gladly have a look at it for you but I'm no legal expert, it's the small print you have to watch. There's also the chance that they will refuse to replace it because they feel that you did it on purpose.

You then end up in a massive and lengthy argument with them becuase you can't prove that you didn't do it on purpose and they can't prove that you did!

Personally, I wouldn't risk it to be honest.

Desktop PC's are harder to 'accidentally' write off because they're easier to repair. Laptops and long flights of very hard stairs however simply don't mix at all

I still don't recommend it to ANYBODY though, unless you can sustain the loss if they decide not to give you a new one

i claimed for a tiny 300mhz pc about 6 months ago, i dropped it down the stairs by accident, i wrote them a letter saying i tripped on the stairs and i had to drop it to stop me from falling, i had a letter to say it was beyond repair and they sent me a new fujitsu 2.7ghz celeron computer

In case of dell, accidental replacement policy is a purchase option. You will require a complete care warranty to replace any dell system if any accidental damage has occured.. It is not covered under normal warranty..

I've got a similar problem as luke with my sony laptop.

Been repaired 3 times now, pain in the @rse!

Got it covered with extra warranty with Comet, not to sure if it covers accidental damage though, falling down stairs etc...
