Hi
Anyone know what the current maximum amount of data you can store on a P910i is ?
And what the data transfer rates are like to a USB2.0 PC?
In *practice*...?
I need to transfer about 2-3 GB of data between home and work.
I gather it can take "Memory Stick Pro Duo" and "Memory Stick Pro Duo"... and from what I can see they go up to what, 4GB? (Less the formatting!).
But how fast and practicable would that all be in practice?
I would be synching with about 1 GB of documents (probably using a utility called FolderMatch) anc copying up to about 1.5 GB of Outlook .PST file... every day.

P910 uses fat16 on the memory card, so you are limited to 2GB MSDP cards only (due to fat16 limitations).
You will need a card reader to transfer your pst file - cable transfer rate of the P910 is impractical.

I might need to get another P910i again. This P990i delay is insane.

What's the difference between
"Memory Stick Duo" and
"Memory Stick Pro Duo"...??
Are you SURE it cant handle more that 2GB?
What exactly is the data transfer rate to/from the phone's memory when it's on its cradle? Any idea in practice?
I can tranfer my 1.2 GB msOutlook2003 .PST file from my WindowsXP PC (using USB 2.0) into my iPod in an *astonnishingly* fast time - less that a couple of minutes! The problem seem to be that the iPod keeps running out of juice if it's not mains powered at the time - and then crashes half way through transferring the file!
The iPod is much slower at transferring lots of individual files - I think 1 GB of random small-ish files took about 15 or 20 minutes.
But my main problem is that the iPod cant reliably synch with my laptop PC without a power supply and is thus useless on most UK trains!
I was wondering if my SE P910i would peform any better...
On reflection I guess I could go out and buy a memory stick reader
for both my PC and also for my Laptop. And maybe I could transport my 4GB of memory stick inside my P910i - regardless of whether or not the phone can actually read it!
I did try buying one of those Corsair memory sticks pencil-like things but it was incredibly unreliable... I think it may have a fault and I probably ougth to send it back to the manufacturers if I can be bothered! But either way my iPod has been much more reliable and just as fast!

Yup, I can confirm that the P910i can only handle 2Gb memory sticks.
I really don't think that the P910i will do what you want it to do. This might sound obvious but primarily it's designed to be a smartphone, not a portable data storage device.
If your using a hard drive based ipod then transfer speeds will be much slower with a P910i because hard drives are faster at transfering data than flash memory is. Again, it's not really built for transfering large amounts of data, rather syncing personal data and transfering the odd photograph, office documents and mp3 or video files.
Wouldn't you be better off with a pocket hard drive like this one?

p910 works with both fat 16 and fat 32 for msdp. i tested in a shop 4 gb duo pro ( sony highspeed) and works fine on p910i. p900 only uses fat 16.

Please talk me through these 4GB SE memory cards...
-How reliable are they?
-How fast can they transfer data?
I guess I would need to buy two card readers - one for my work PC , and one for my laptop.
- So the card readers, can you get them to fit straight into a (half-width[?]) PCMCIA slot?
- How quickly do you think the contacts would wear out?
I mean if I use it every day that would mean pushing in and out about
3 or 400 x2/day i.e. about 1000 times in a year. Are the contacts designed for that sort of level of useage?

Well that's very interesting?? I read posts by many people that they formatted their 1GB cards as FAT32 and the P910 couldn't read the card unless it was formatted back to fat16.
FAT16 has a limit of 4GB, but generally only Windows XP (or any NT based os), can read 4GB fat16 partitions - fat16 support in small devices such as phones is limited to max. 2GB.
Here are some links:

Also, the P910 whitepaper says the P910 supports fat16 only. So I'm just a little curious about your statement. No offence intended, but I'm tempted to believe you are just making an assumption, or that you tried another phone for example a K750 (which supports fat32) and assumed the P910 would be the same.
Sorry to doubt you but most people have found that P910 only supports FAT16. What firmware do you have on the P910?

Yup, I always rely on my card-reader when transferring files from my PC to my fone . . . never used data-cables or Blutooth (in full) . . .

I use my SE P910i with 4GB memory stick pro duo SanDisk. The card is working with some limitations. I formatted it with windows xp computer managment utility in FAT16 FS.
The limitations are- unability to install software and transpher files on card via pc suite. I install my software to small 32mb card and then I copy all to the 4GB card with reader- all programs and games work's fine on card this way. There isn't any problem to operate with files using SMan on the phone- copy / paste from/to phone internal memory to/from card works fine. The speed is very good.
There are some programs which can't write or copy files directly to a 4GB card like a picture viewer, but I manage that with SMan File Manger. The original Sony Er.File Manager works fine, but I prefer SMan.
I'm looking 4 software to partition a card to four 1gb drives. Partition Magic 8,5 can't do that.

And one tip form me SanDisk card is much faster than Sony high speed card. See here-
