I have tried various java & wap pages for MSN Messenger on my previous SE phones, but they all seemed a bit unreliable.
Can anyone recommend the best? Is there an official client?

Also, can someone tell me how much data is used in a typical chat session?

I think IM+ is good, but you need to register and pay for it, but then it supports many different IM's.

A good alternative, unless removed by branding, is to sign up at yamigo, a free "wireless village", the standard that the built in IM-program supports. In my phone (Swedish menus) the app is called 'Mina vänner', My Friends, it might be called something else in English-speaking phones, but right now I am too lazy to change phone language to check. This app natively runs in the background, can autostart and auto-login. Yamigo supports at least MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ.

I have not looked for a single protocol IM client, so I could not help you there. I think MSN is available as a web version for phones, though. Could work if you are desperate.

MIG33 is the best for me the fact that you are chatting real time.

Yamigo development seems to have ceased, at least their service works pretty bad for me. I have switched to SmartVAS which works much better. They have currently only support for MSN connections.

SmartVAS and the "My Friends" feature is the best combination, I've found. The My Friends feature has great integration into the activity menu (individual chats show up, etc) that none of the java solutions can come close to.

Smartvas and My Friends works a dream and the data usage is minimal.

Settings and info here
