I'm going a little stir-crazy and my mind starts wondering in lala-land. So I started thinking - SE releases a quad-band prototype of the K790 manufactured before the press release (most of the ones I saw on hofo were dated 06W07 or 06w08) and then they state that there will be no less than 3 different models of the K790...
Is it possible that all K790's are actually quad-band and have the 850 or 900 frequencies respectively suppressed in the i and a versions? IF that's the case, question #2 is - would it be possible to unlock the extra frequency?
I know it's mostly wishful thinking on my part (Very wishful!) but I think it's sort of 'out of the box' thinking that led me to this question.

well "is" it were like that then flashing it to the respective f/w would "unlock" the frequencies but if it weren't then you'd just have a phone without reception.

Doubtful. Making and marketing two different models only makes things MORE expensive, since it making the logistics more complicated (if the 790 doesn't sell as well as expected in America, they can't just sell the overstock in Europe instead).
There's really no benefit to making a triband phone over a quadband phone, except that the chipsets are cheaper - which is exactly what they're doing.

It's an interesting thoery and quite possible. Companies do it all the time, take a look at DVD Roms, out of the box, they are all multi regional. once you install it and start using discs from your own region, the unit automatically locks itself to that region.

@kalleboo - I was thinking about the cost associated as well. SE is currently having to buy two different chipsets for the i/c and a models which means they might not get the volume discount that a single quad-chipset might give them.
All of this is speculation of course but I'd be curious to see if it could be true.

a lot of motorolas (v220, v300, v600, v3 razr, e398, rockr 1 and so on...) come tri-band, but you can hack the FW to make it quad-band...
did it myself with my brother's e398...done and tested...
