My brother Nokia 6600 seem to have suddenly developed a problem on his keypad. The key number 9 is not responding as well as the other keys. Sometimes it doesn't respond when it is pressed down and other times he needs to press it hard for the key to work. The rest of the keypad and keys work perfectly and responds to touch.

He has not really used the phone much, nor has not done anything to it like had the phone in humid place, split liquid on the keypad or knocked/dropped the phone.

Does anyone know what may have caused this to happen?

The phone is over 3 years old and therefore out of warranty, but hes thinking to take it to a Nokia Service centre for them to have a look at it. Does anyone know how much they would charge to have a look and repair they keypad?

Would it be easy to repair the keypad by himself? If so what tools would he need to open the phone and would he need to clean or replace the keypad?

Regards,

it's probably the keypad mat underneath the keypad that's on it's way out. i think you can buy replacement mats of ebay. fairly simple job, should just take 5 mins with a t6 screwdriver

@ Sammy_boy: Ah you mean the keyboard membrane? Ok, so he would need to get both the trox screw driver and the membrane which should be available on eBay?

He will still go to Nokia Service Centre to see how they quote him for repair.

it's probably only economically viable to get the parts off ebay and do it yourself, the membrane should only be a few quid and the t6 £2-3.

be interesting to see how much nokia would want to repair it!

My father-in-law first 6600 had a problem like yours, but randomly: sometimes the whole latter row of digits was unpressable, sometimes a press over one button brought another digit out (ex. you press 7 and it puts 1). The day after all ok.

Sometimes an hard reset could bring rest for some day (it's the sequence of 4 digits pressed together at the boot, can't remember exactly).
At the last, it was swapped with another one cell.

That's to say that it could be also a fw/sw problem. Try a reset before going to buy a new keyboard membrane!

My suggestion: look for "6600 hard reset" in google to find the way...

@ Macco: He has't tired a hard-reset yet, but i'll suggest it to him and see if that does anythign regarding the problem.

@ fatreg: I was just about to ask how to do a hard reset on the 6600. Thanks for the info!
