We all do things on impulse from time to time without realising until its done and then we wonder how we did it in the first place.
In this case because the phone was next to the iron and he may have been expecting a important call (most likely a girlfriend) ....and obviously he was planning to go out hence the ironing.

Thass what I was gunna say, but maybe he thought he might do it so started to film.
I've done stupid stuff without thinking, like put me rubbish on the side and my plate in the bin.
Or when i'm watching tv and eating, like i try to dink from my fork and then I think, wtfbbq??
