> M600i : Vodafone UK issues list
Bookmark topic
Hi All,
I am beginning to compile a list of ALL known issues with the Vodafone abhorrent bastardisation of the UIQ 3.0 interface for the M600i.
If anyone would care to highlight specific issues here, I'll aim to get them written up in an email that we should be able to bombard their technical team to help with their fixing of it.
Their mis-handling of what is the best interface on a mobile device (IMHO) should be reported.
Anyhoo, feel free to add comments (even positive ones of you have them) here and I'll see what I can do.

to be honest..I like the kinda layout of the Interface for the Voda firmware. The icons on the top bar are a nicer detail than the SE icons. One thing i hate tho is how they have changed things like the Task Manager and the Today screen. I hate thinking that my product (although I did get it free) is somehow inferior to the Sim-Free phones. I cant help thinking that the phone could have so much more potential.
I absolutly HATE the grey/red theme that vodefone have going on. and the vodefone thing at the start is a pain in the ass. I think it would be ok if vodafone put a wee bit of their own stuff on it but not mess around with the important stuff.

It's the Task Manager and Today Screen changes that really upset me.
I agree with you on the icons etc, although it would be nice to have had the choice I think.

I hate the vodafone branding and want to know if i can debrand it yet? The icons are the usual colourless vodafone live icons. In its favour tho the firmware seems really stable no crashes or sluggishness yet. Mine is branded but not sim locked?! I have 2wks to decide if im keeping it. If The w950 gets a concrete release date i might swap as i was initially attracted to the qwerty key pad but my sausage thumbs and fingers dont suit. Ive also noticed there are no icons on the today screen for Advanced call manager. Is this a result of voda's branding or just a change in uiq3 as the p910 used to giv you an indicator to let you know its working

I believe it's a result of the voda 'branding'.
I'll try and get some screenshots off of the phone to explain the issues to everyone here - because I genuinely don't believe that people think that UIQ on these handsets is as crippled as it it.
For the record SE refuse to do anything about it.
Voda aren't budging either.

Oh no! then all 3rd party apps are going to be dumped in the tools folder. Instead of having its own icon in the menu screen. Hmm i really like the size and form factor of this phone but i may just abuse it for the 2 wk cooling off period and send it back. Cant it just be unbranded? If not now sometime in the future? Or will the seus updates return it to its voda state when you update it.

I'm really glad I'm not the only person having issues with the vodafone branding on this phone, like i said in another topic: why they would reduce the functionality for no good reason on the device they deliver their service on is madness, and frankly not good business. I have a few days left of my 14 day trial period to return, but the problem is a common one, I love the phone and hate the branding.
I had considered keeping the phone and simply debranding it at a later date, but as some people have said if I try to do a subsequent SE update it will return to vodafone branded software.
Anyway, apart from the obvious today screen missing a few important parts they've also decided to remove the dropdown shortcut menu located in the top left hand corner (it's there in screenshot of the SE firmware I've seen), click that area with your stylus and you'll see what I mean. I really don't understand this, why remove the menu and force users to needlessly navigate the traditional menu? Crazy...

I agree with all of these points entirely.
I am trying to collate something to send to vodafone, but they aren't *able* to put me in touch with anyone to discuss these options with.
Sadly, I got such a good deal on my phone with them that despite returning my original m600i, I have now have 'no choice' but to get the same phone again and pray that future voda firmware (or unbranding) rescues it...
sad.
And sadder still that neither Voda or SE seem to care...

I feel the same way. I took mine back today and now i miss it. Im back to using my n91 and its big, heavy and clumsy. I decided I would settle for an N80 instead but that has been discontinued on Voda because of a number of issues (tinkering with the firmware is probably one of them).
Now I want my little m600i back!! Voda say they are likely to have the w950 by the end of Sept and I could wait for this but they will probably butcher the firmware on that as well.
I dont know whether the firmware updates are network specific on sony ericssons but I had a nokia n70 that i had to sell because I wasnt allowed the generic firmware that could have resolved the problems it had.. Instead I was stuck with a 3 firmware that hadnt been updated in over 8 months!
When are networks going to give up. Stick a network badge on it by all means. A screen saver and a theme if it supports them but leave the phones firmware alone!!!!

This thing is really getting to me now, far more than what's healthy. I became further exasperated with Vodafone after I got a 'welcome to our network' phone call this evening. The guy was running through his script, blah blah, yadda yadda before reaching the question "Are you happy with your handset?"
Actually I wasn't really listening (his monotone voice and lifeless reading of the script for probably 50th time today had caused my attention to wander), whether or not he actually asked that question is in doubt, however I was determined to answer. The conversation went a little like this:
me: The m600i is brilliant, the vodafone branded software is not
him *pause to find scripted response* blah blah blah vodafone sales talk blah
me: Yeah... the problem is you (vodafone) have removed a lot of the functionality from the phone for no apparent reason. Certain menus and shortcuts are missing, etc
him: oh right, well maybe is you call the customer the service department on '191' free of charge from your handset , they will be able to send the settings through
me: *a long pause of disbelief* I don't think you understand. Fundamental aspects of the software have been removed.
The conversation goes on, he repeatedly tells me to phone customer services as if that was the answer to any problem, he just wasn't understanding me. Eventually is used this metaphor to good effect:
me: Imagine you bought a pc from Vodafone, and that pc was running Windows. Now imagine that because it's from Vodafone they thought "How can we make windows unique to us" and they answer they reached was "you know that start menu in the bottom corner? Handy, isn't it? Let's remove that and replace it with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Oh and some of these desktop icons can got too."
Afterwards, I felt a little bad. He was obviously the wrong person to direct my frustrations at, but regardless he was still a moron.
I'm thinking of starting a website/blog to chronicle my attempts in reaching someone higher in the chain to answer for this. I really just want to know WHY? DAMMIT, WHY?
