I have a Walkman W810i. And I used to own several SE phones too. I noticed that the usual blue triangle (gprs icon) has been replaced with white capital letter "G"...Sometimes it changes to a white capital letter "E".
I also noticed that if it's on "G", the browsing and downloading speed is slower compared to if it's on "E".
Is "G" for GPRS? "E" for EDGE?

Yes if a phone supports edge as well as your provider than it will display E on the other hand if you have a phone that supports edge but your provider does not than your phone will display G only which stands for GPRS (GENERAL RADIO PACKET SIGNAL)

I think so. but how come sometimes the phone is using "E" and at times "G". Might be my location?

Some transmitter towers might not be upgraded to EDGE yet, so it falls back to GPRS.

I could go both ways on it. On my older Ericssons, I always thought the GPRS triangle muddied the signal bars a little. I think the new style is a lot cleaner, but only wish there was a more universal styling (on Sony Ericsson) for when in range of a 3G/Edge/GPRS network.
Currently on the K800 we get our 3G logo, our spinning globe, and our triangle above the signal bar - all indicating very similar aspects of data transfer.
It would be nice to combine it all with on icon, somehow.

Imo triangle is enough, that icon show is pointless, umts icon and the triangle or just triangle is enough

An elegant option to me seems to just retain the triangle, but put in a different fill.
Like so:
Here I've embedded the UMTS icon inside the GPRS triangle.
