The Orange UK website states that the P990 is 'Answer Fax ...' compatible (http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/handset/sony_ericsson_p990i/features). 'Answer Fax' is Orange's name for its fax mailbox service. This statement could imply that the P990's GSM modem is fax compatible (unlike the P910's of course), yet Sony Ericsson's own P990 page doesn't confirm that.
Does anyone know what the score is on the fax front for the P990?

I would have thought its a service that Orange offer like Vodafone does etc. Where you send a fax to a mailbox number which then translates it into a picture message or text message or whatever. I doubt its a feature of the phone.

No, the Answer Fax service is literally a mailbox for faxes -- I use it myself. Once you've received a fax in the mailbox, you can redirect it to be printed out at a physical fax machine, a pc or via a fax-capable mobile phone to a laptop or PDA. I used to use my old SE T39 as a fax modem in conjunction with Answer Fax, but not so with the P910. What Orange appears to be implying is that the P990 can be used as a fax modem. I agree with you, though, that this is unlikely to be a feature of the phone. As such, I think the Orange website is misleading.

I have to disagree ... AnswerFax can be used with ANY phone on the Orange network (rightback to nokia 3210 or SE T10). It is purely a network feature storing the fax in a remote mailbox for you to forward onto any "real" fax or fax modem. The P990 is not FAX compatible and the Orange service is not misleading or suggesting that the P990 will be able to send or receive faxes directly.
