What is the difference between the two chatboards? Except that they fit different phones.

I have one, don't know which one though. It has 5 green buttons at the top, and yes and no.
I was more into the hardware differensis, because I saw at some hardware site where they had modded a Chatboard to use as a keyboard with a PS2.

The conversion of cha-01 in cha-10 is possible, but not completely.
Well, I refer to use the cha-01 with the sonyericsson t310, t230 or t610, wich is the same as have a cha-10, and the only cause to do this is that the cha-01 and cha-10 are suspiciously similar but the first one is now incredibly cheaper than the other, and through internet, thousand of pages can be found to get other uses for this chatboard, like with the GP32 or GameBoy Advance...
Like in the tutorials of GP32 chatboard I recomend to use a general conector instead of a cable for the output of the chatboard, this way, you could decide what use you will get from the chatboard, making various individual cables for each machine (one for the phone, another for the console...)
To use the chatboard with one of the last sony ericsson, just need to know wich are the pin involved on the control of the process, well in the chatboard, the pins are the same as in a old ericsson phone.
The first pin (the alone one):
Vcc+
Next four are:
Rx
GND
Tx
(strange pin) conect it to Vcc+
The others are unused.
Okay, but this is only the first part, where is the conectors in my sonyericsson:
Well, there are two separate conectors on the booty

of your phone, the one which is as right as possible is
the Vcc+
the other near this is GND
, and if we look the pins starting for the other side (the side which a lot of the pins are together)
the 4 is the Rx
and the 5 is Tx.
I recommend to use the conector of a phone cable (is the cheaper way) desold it and make an adapter to change between this cable and your new cheaper chatboard.
Finally, why you say the conversion is not completely possible? Because the can only have the same buttons active like the ones wich are in our phone, I mean the 0-9, yes, no, * buttons are operative, but the others doesn't seem to work, surely becouse all the ericsson phones have the same basic instruccion but with the new phones some changes make the signals different for the new and old phones.
