> eBay bans stolen phones

Along with the London Metropolitan Police eBay have banned the sale of handsets that are barred.
Whether eBay will be able to police the ban remains to be seen but at least its a step in the right direction.

that will never work...
"phone doesnt pick up a network" will be what you see from now on..

strange

I thought this was in their restricted items for a while now
anyway, it can only help make stolen phones less saleable and thus less worth the bother of stealing in the first place.
as a side note, Esato doesn't allow the trading in barred phones either

Yes, I bet phones will be appearing with a 'network problem', or 'no signal' instead!
Step in the right direction though, shows they want to do something about it

They were still great for spare parts...

I just don't see this working. For example, where a phone is barred in Ireland, It will work anywhere else. The only way this can be administered is if all countries share banned IMEI's AND then give ebay access to that list. Then of course, you have to introduce a policy where all phones sold on ebay must have there IMEI provided to ebay officials.
A GREAT idea but not realistic!

Somehow i can't see them stopping everyone selling barred/stolen phones.
They still let people sell fake dvds and pc software even though there rules forbid it.

Hmmm now this is one of those things I feel a bit funny about. I am in no way a theif and have never stolen a phone, but I do get barred phones in now and again, one time I used a phone for a year and that it got barred forcing me to buy a new one, the main problem was if this happens to you within like a month it could mean loosing over £100 on a phone and no way to recover that...

Couldnt ebay ask for the IMEI number then when it gets sold on, there is proof of where it was bought from. So if it was barred for example, details could be sent of who bought and sold it, then maybe recover some costs?
Then again, theres always that risk where the seller of the stolen phone wont reply to e-mails and just shut down or never log into the account again.
Hang on, but then wouldnt ebay be able to log the sellers ip address and if they broke the law, report them, or would that be breaking the data protection act?
Its an idea though!
