> SMS length query

On my W800 the max length of an SMS is 160 characters. What i want to know is that whether this is network dependent or phone? And if its phone, is it the same for all(nokia, samsung etc). And if they have more, then isnt it kinds stupid for SE to implement such a low character limit?

160 characters is the GSM standard and so is the same for all phones and networks
