> k800 mem card shortage

got a memory card for £39 offnet a gig. put it im ne k800 and formated it but only got 811meg and not a gig, anyone know why? is it faulty

I noticed something similar with my 512MB M2 card. I also have a Motorola E770v with a 512MB SD Transflash card in it, and when I got the K800, I basically transfered all the contents (mostly mp3's) of the Transflash card to the computer, and from there I transfered that contents to the M2 card in the K800. After thsat maneuver, the contents of the M2 card and the Transflash card was identical. What I noticed then was, that the "Space left" reported by K800 was much lower than the space left on the Transflash card repoted by the Moto. I assume that the memory organization is different, thet the overhead and file system management needs more space on the M2 cards, or that Sony simply lies about the actual size of their memory cards. 811 megs in a 1G is rather low though, I have read somewhere in a discussion forum like this that they contain a little bit more than 900 megs.

My 1gb I used 2 have in my K750i was 956mb. Mine was an original Sony card, my 512mb in my W810i only gives 467mb. I found this even with other types of cards, mmc, sd, mspro and duo.

don't forget about the "hidden" systems files (not anymore if you use a card reader) that do not appear in the phone. They too take up chunks of memory.

Second: formatting, cluster sizes, FAT 16 or FAT 32 all play a part in the usable size available. If you buy a 512 card, do not expect to receive 512. It is just that simple.

Of course not, it's the same as when a 160 GB harddrive for the PC contains 155 GB when formatted, but the difference, 811MB in a 1024 MB (1G) card is a loss of about 20%, and that's far too much. The memory stick is incorreclty labelled IMHO, it should have been labelled 900M instead.

Everyone knows that a 512 or 160 or 20 gig drive will yield different sizes than what is actually represented on the drive. However, clusters formatted in FAT, or NTFS, FAT 32. 4K will yield different results than an 8K file clusters. The bottom line is that you never get what is advertised and EVERYONE should know this.

Pretty certain that when I purchased my M2 card, I just plugged it in without having to format it.
I'm also certain that I had over 900Mb on my 1Gb card of usable storage.
Not sure if formatting it has caused the dramatic loss is usable capacity.

btw, I have never (ever) formatted any memory card be it memory stick, secure digital, MMC or whatever
