> Need a AntiVirus and Firewall!
Bookmark topic
My Norton Internet Security subscription ran out quite a while back, and since then I have been using the non-updatable Norton and the simple Windows security to protect me, along with SpyBot which I have always used. Because I do not really have the money to renew my subscription with Norton, I didn't, and although I cannot update it anymore everything did seem ok and along with Windows security, it was keeping most things out.
Anyway, recently I've noticed a lot of slow down and problems that could relate to a or some viruses currently on my computer, problems such as no response when trying to shut down my computer, or programs and games messing up for no apparent reason. Its quite possible that something nasty is on my computer, something actually able to randomly turn Norton off! Although I do scan often using Norton, it doesn't hardly pick anything up, only urging me to renew my subscription all the time. But I have quite an expensive system that I fear for very much, and I doubt that a months odd non-updated Norton and a simple Windows security program already there will protect me as much as they should.
So what I'm asking is...
Can anyone help and refer me to or reccomend a or some free very decent Internet Security program/s that will do most of, if not all that Norton can do, as well as update etc, stuff like a Firewall and AntiVirus? Don't worry about the Spyware, SpyBot is superb at that! Also it needs to be able to allow/block selected programs to/from accessing the internet, due to a lot of my games and programs/applications needing the internet.
Thanks for any help!

Both absolutely free, do the job perfectly well and don't slow your machine down

^ And they work well together yes?
Also with the firewall, will it allow me to manually change or ask me what programs are allowed to access the internet? Such as applications and games etc...
And I am assuming the firewall is going to be much better than the Windows Firewall yes?
Thanks all, tough decision this.
Also, if I am to get a new firewall and virus protection, should I uninstall or turn off Norton, or leave it running also?

The windows sp2 firewall is the most low-end firewall out there.
I'd suggest you to try and go for 1 full fledge security app, rather than bundling things from different companies.
And uninstall your norton completely before installing any new a/v or firewall.

AVG and Zone alarm work fine together
Zone alarm works just like norton firewall. It pops up a little window everytime a new or updated application wants to access the Internet. You can either allow it once, allow it always, disallow once etc.
You can also edit the list of allowed / disallowed apps whenever you wish via the settings menu. It's pretty straightforward.
Normally, I would agree that an all-in-one security suite is better but just lately, many security suites have become so big and bloated that they can cause more problems than they prevent, particularly on older computers. For this reason, I would recommend AVG+Zonealarm over an all in one package since they are both very small and light. And they really do work!

I am using AVG free edition + ZA at my comp at home.. no issues so far.. have been using for a year now. both are very unobstructive and as said the ZA just pops a little window asking whether to give permission. plus, i really like the internet lock feature whihc completly disables any inside or outside communication on all the ports. the AVG does a recommendable job.
