So, I was playing with flight mode today and I find that if I turn on flight mode the FM radio switches off and cannot be tuned on again!
every device I have ever used with flight mode only ever turns of transmitters so what danger is FM radio?
Also, turning on flight mode turns of wifi but you can turn wifi back on again in flight mode though you do get a warning
Also, although you can turn on wifi in flight mode you cannot turn on bluetooth so no in flight HBH-DS970 listening
lets also not forget that we sometimes use flight mode when not even taking a flight but when we simply dont want to have calling ability but do want to listen to radio/music via BT
so whats this all about? what on earth were SE thinking of when deciding what can and cannot work in flight mode

It does seem alittle bit dim of SE not to allow you to switch fm radio back on whilst in flightmode!
Maybe i should go ahead and get that Orange SPV M3100 afterall, SE seem to have lost the plot with this device!

Well I guess for the non tech minded it was easier for them to implement this option, as I am sure you aware that FM signals do affect the frequency that planes work on (ground control to plane), In my work I deal with alot of Pilots and coming over Heathrow they have warned can be a problem especially with Pirate Radio Stations they have been known to take over the frequency.
Wifi doesnt affect anything in-flight as u aware they Boeing offers Connexion (which I believe is being axed).
So really I think they did well to turn off the FM in flight mode.

@masseur,
I know you know but if you don't want calls simply add the Divert Calls shortcut to a menu and...

I can understand the pirate radio point where their equipment may not be up to scratch and they transmit on frequencies slightly adjacent to the one they are wanting... but thats the transmission side whereas we're talking about the receiving side here which is almost passive (of course... all electronic equipment gives off some RF radiation)
I too am a pilot to the level of commercial theory (haven't done the practical yet) and when doing instrument flying we even listen to local radio via the on board navigation equipment as some ATC reporting points around Sydney are based on very tall radio station towers, so we tune in to identify them and also listen to the music
For voice communication, airraft use frequencies in the range of 108 - 137mhz whereas FM is 88-108mhz so its only the top end of FM that could possibly overlap and generally few airports use frequencies near that low end for this reason.
again though, in the P990 we're talking about a receiver only that has a fixed frequency range to receive on.
next, wifi and bluetooth both operate in the 2.4-2.48ghz band and generally speaking, bluetooth is limited to 10 metres whereas wifi is generally rated to 100m suggesting wifi is higher power than bluetooth. I'm no techo in this area but it makes no sense to me to allow wifi and not bluetooth!
@Jah, yeah

, but thats not really the point I'm trying to make

I agree with you 100%. Mobile phones have changed over the yrs, before it was just labeld as a mobile phone JUST to make calls but now its different its much more than that now. Its now a PDA, MP3, Movie player, picture view, a personal radio and much more I mean we are allowed to use a personal radio on plane so I dont understand why would they switch it off.

The bottom liner is that SE should at least give the customer the option to switch on or off whatever features or functions they choose to use.
Especially if your not even on a flight in the first place, i certainly aint travelling on planes 24/7
Give us flightmode with radio, and bluetooth enabled!
And when i'm next on a flight i will turn these functions off when asked to by the flight attendants.
Thats what everyone is asked to do before and during take off as many phones still dont incorporate a flightmode feature!
BTW if its that much of a major concern airlines should ban cellphones, fm radios and Bluetooth devices altogether during flights!

On all the flights I've been on recently, radio receivers are explicitly prohibited in the pre-flight safety briefing - along with cordless mice (though I guess that's principally aimed at RF rather than Bluetooth mice).
