ok well FM is VHF? or UHF i forget well i know that aircaft use UHF to fly round our local runway (sheffield areo club) well is there anyway to edit the FM reciver to use lower or higher freq's by a mod because it wouldnt be limited to 88.xx-109.xx would it by hardware?!

as an FM reciever just picks up and amps FM radio waves on the desired Freq correct?

anyway if any1 has an idea

cheers

You are asking for something illegal.

The tuner hardware most probably has a limited range in order to make it cheaper.

its not illigal to listen to UHF when my dads flying the censna? its only a lil grass field i wanna know so my dad doesnt have to spend £200+ on a scanner it IS illigal to broadcast FM/UHF without authority and to listen to police/armed forces freq's not say 112.85UHF which nablethorp airfield uses for tower

in normal ops, aircraft communicate and navigate using VHF radios but for long overwater flights and flights into remote areas etc (like a flight I did from Sydney to Ayers Rock) you use a HF radio. The reason for this is that VHF is affected both by line-of-sight and range whereas HF at the right frequency will skip between the earth and the ionisphere. Its not unknown for for Qantas flight crew sitting on the ground at Sydney to get the latest cricket scores direct from London ATC using HF radio!

As you mention though, the (il)legalities area limited to transmission and also to reception on frequencies that are restricted

I doubt you will achieve here what you are suggesting but you don't need to spend £200 on a scanner, £50 will get you a reliable air-band capable scanner. I didn't pay too much more than £200 for my icom transceiver with VOR/NAV indications!

Aircrafts use VHF (Very High Frequency)

The civilian airband is 108-136Mhz, I have a scanner (Maycom FR-100, cost me about £50 off Ebay) that can pick those frequencies up, it could also pick up emegency services and the police too, which I sometimes couldn't resist listening to , but they have mostly now gone over to the digital TETRA services which are encrypted and can't be picked up by scanners anymore.

It can be fascinating listening to aircraft!
