Microsoft has been persuaded to install a panic button in UK editions of Messenger,a mere mouse click will alert the authorities that an online sex offender has been discovered.

Press Release

The tab will appear on both MSN Messenger, and its replacement, Windows Live Messenger. As well as a ‘one click’ link through to a report to the police, each week, CEOP and Microsoft will provide a new safety tip as part of the tab, for example, how to safeguard your personal details or to how to spot a potential threat.

Not sure if that's a good idea or yet another example of the paranoia we live in at the moment!

Exactly...This is the worst idea of all bad ideas, which will only enable every crackpot and prankster to distract police with claims that online sexual predators are pursuing them.

this goes to the debate of kids being allowed on MSN you have to be 13+ anyway by TaC of MSN/Hotmail the button is a bad idea because it will waste alot of police time.

if i had kids i would allow them to go on MSN cam n w/e else people may see me as a bad perant but kids wont talk to people because there taut not to talk 2 strangers at school and loose comunication skills i was tught this at college

kids get it drilled into there heads talking to people you dont know is wrong, and behind the desk is safe...

if i didnt use chat sites, MSN or anything i'd be a very lonly person because i live in the middle of nowhere and dont drive

You cant say they lose communication skills because they are taught not to speak to strangers!?

In this day and age, parents have to be very careful who they let their children talk to, and its very hard to say "that person is ok" and "that one isnt"

I think this button is a good idea, if the child is taught when to use it and why. Everyone is entitled to use chat rooms, but there are some sick people out there who look out for children. THEY are the ones who should be worried about this button.

In my opinion anyway!
