With this method you read only the new emails (actually titles and a few words of body), spending only 1kb-2kb by time. Only MIDP2
The only free app (looks like at least in a basic use) at this moment I found is feedburner mfr 2
You need to config a feed to read your gmail account with this format:
https://username:password@gmail.google.com/gmail/feed/atom/

Ok it seems Google gets crazy (heps pages say nothing about it). They have changed (or add another) url for getting "alerts" of ONLY NEW emails through RSS. This ways is cool for sites where GPRS is so expensive (my situation).
Put https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/ and give ur user/pass in authentication boxes.

Good new is a found another cool, free, a verylite feed reader app in j2me (midp1) that works good in my P910 called "RSS Reader MIDlet" of Tommi Laukkanen ( http://www.substanceofcode.com/software/rss-reader-midlet/ ). It supports authentication.
