Playstation Magazine(PSM) claims that Sony is soon going to launch a new PSP in 2007.

"It will not be the 'PSP 2'," stated the PSM staff. "However, Sony is instead eyeing a page from Apple's iPod strategy and upgrading the existing PSP's specifications while keeping the retail price the same."

The mag even went into specifics as to what changes will be made. PSM pointed out that Sony recently made a deal with Samsung to purchase "a large amount of 8GB flash memory chips, which are to be built into the new PSP according to numerous semiconductor industry reports." PSM speculates that this increased built-in memory will facilitate Sony's PSP downloadable game and content strategy.

The current PSP features an expansion slot for memory sticks, and comes packed with a minute 32MB of memory.

In addition, PSM expects the new PSP to incorporate a built-in still/video camera with potential EyeToy-type gaming capabilities.

Aesthetically, it will reportedly be thinner and lighter than today's PSP, which will help reduce production costs. A slot-load UMD drive is also expected.

One feature the publication doesn't expect, however, is the addition of a second analog stick; something that many PSP gamers think the system could certainly benefit from.

Furthermore, PSM states that "From all indications, the next PSP will have the same graphic and sound capabilities of the current system," and will still fully support UMDs.

Still, there will surely be some consumers upset that a sleeker, significantly more capable PSP is arriving so soon.

The original launched in North America on March 24, 2005 for $250.

Ye,i agree atm the news has been confirmed as untrue by sony, but who knows tomorrow if nintedo and others release new versions of there gamecube,ds etc.Sony will itself be pressurised to upgrade the psp.
And the specs reported above are pretty much all the psp needs as an upgrade.
But as far as a 'PSP 2' is concerned i think its far too early to think about it.
The current psp itself i consider is the most advanced portable gaming device out there, withoust any gr8 competition going for it.So from what i see unless a nintendo,a samsung,or maybe microsoft announce something more advanced than the psp, sony heads will be the last people to think about adding a new member to the PSP 'familia'
