i got a phone off o2 online and want to exchange it for another one...
does anyone know if i can take it into an o2 shop or do i have to send it back and wait to order another one???

You can if the shop agrees to it. I did the upgrades for an O2 Online set of packages i have.
Ring your local before going in and tell them you were told you could by O2 Retentions
