Vodafone suplied handsets seem to have some unusual modification.
It seems that the 'hardware buttons' config utility (......tools/control panel/device) only allows the conguration of the internet button - not the media player button.
This is in itself unusual - it would almost be expected for them to map the internet button to vodafone live and disable its configuration, but to omit media button configuration altogether seems senseless.
Phone is supplied with R5A0006 and will not update further through SE. (although reporting that phone is up to date - 'continuing anyway' the update process worked seemlessly.)
It may also be worth mentioning that the battery supplied is the BST-33 950mAh - rather than the 1120 mAh BST-34.
I have had two units and sent them both back.
Need to decide whether these symptoms are synonymous with all vodafone users, or have I had two phones from an 'early' batch.
Will rebranding be feasible with the P990 ? - SE report that their update service will look at IMEI number and subsequently replace software on a 'rebranded' phone with operator specific software
Is this true ?

Are you saying you managed to update to latest when you said continue?
Everyting you said above applys to my Vodafone P990i but I have no problem at this time as I want the internet button & media buttons as default. Sure latter firmware will solve stuff.

I doubt very much it updated on seus to the latest unbranded version.
Edit: he probably just flashed the phone with the same software that was on there before i.e no change

I managed to 'update' to the same .....(validating only that the update service is functional with vodafone branded handsets)
In that I mean that the latest software version that you can update to through SE update with a vodafone handset is the R5A0006 (the same that was supplied with the phone)
Its not the latest P990 software. Its the latest SE software that vodafone have passed/edited - that SE update is allowed to send through to phones that it recognises as vodafone branded handsets
Good that the update works -
Bad that vodafone handsets will always have to wait for updated soft/firmware.
I agree, relating to your 2nd point, that I am unlikely to care to much about the media button too. But.....
1. I would really like to know why the config is disabled - it makes no sense.
2. How many other changes have been made that are as yet hidden, and what are their potential implications.
I'd just like to know what I am buying.....

Same here. No media key to map. Only internet key.

Strange, why would Vodafone supply different batteries for their P990 range?

All P990's so far have the BST-33 (bar maybe one or two)

Either
they negotiate a better price on the P990's using SE's remaining stock of BST33's.
or
they are selling early P990's that have been supplied with BST 33's
(maybe both)
not really an issue though - the BST 34 should be available in a few days anyway.

Is that true , with non-vodafone customers ?
I know of a number of people (non-vodafone) that have BST-34's and full hardware button config.
It seems that those who have BST-33's also lack media button configuration. - can that be true ?
Is this an early batch of handset ?
Maybe the lack of media button config is not a vodafone issue at all ? But cant be remedied for vodafone customers untill they support SE's later software.
