Hi!

Trying to add a dial-up connection to a VAIO and I get Modem Error 633

I can see many pages on the net, about renaming telephone.ini and running tapiini.exe

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191444/EN-US/

I am a bit edgy about doing this because the OS is Japanese.

Any advice appreciated !

You can still make a copy of the original files without having to understand Japanese by using keyboard shortcuts. Ctrl + C for copy, Ctrl + V for paste. Double click on the file name rather than the icon to rename the backup copies if you need to restore them. As long as you make a copy of the original files, you won't do any harm since you can just delete the edited versions and rename the originals.

If it's a desktop vaio rather than a laptop, I'd just stick a new modem in first to see whether or not it's a hardware problem. If it's not, try a system file scan to replace any corrupted files. Click start, then run, then type sfc /scannow (win 2000/XP) or just sfc (win98/me). You'll need your windows disk.

I am OK with Japanese except when it comes to editing the registry, which is what some internet pages were suggesting !

It is a notebook VAIO, Japanese version of Sony VAIO TX2HP.

I will need my Windows disc? Oh! I think the OS is installed on the C:/ drive of the VAIO.

I will boot up and give it a try!

edit...

" Click start, then run, then type sfc /scannow (win 2000/XP) "
doesn't run on a Japanese Windows XP machine.

hmmm, more reading and searching...!

Thanks for your quick reply!

Ah right, I see what you mean now

sfc /scannow should work though, it must be something to do with the keyboard layout and Japanese language pack. Don't worry about it though, I only suggested it because it's worked a couple of times for me to resolve modem problems although not the specific error that you're getting.

Since i've never used a PC with Japanese layout and language I'm afraid I can't really think of anything else to suggest It would still be worth trying an external modem if you can get your hands on one though just to make sure. Good luck!

thanks Cycovision!

It should not be a language input issue because I can type English or Japanese directly into the 'run' box.

I am tempted to either delete or and re-install or update the driver.

but I will meet a Japanese friend this week, so maybe I will wait! He was a systems engineer and is now studying about networks etc here..

Got all working with WiFi, WiFi in the uni library, with a 802se and also a Sharp 902 as modems.. so I will get it cracked...

thanks again!
