what do i do?

itunes doesnt detect it when i connect it via my firewire cable

Man I feel for you, if its to do with that STUPID update thing then i feel for you even more. My nano died on me after i 'updated' it it wouldnt even show colours.

just run the apple ipod updaster on the new items and click the restore button

Yeah that should reset it, have you been through all of the points stated on the apple website. After that email or ring apple technical support and see if they can help.

Failing that you will have to send it to them to be repaired/replaced if under warranty, if not i guess you will have to ebay it maybe.

on the day i received it i could get to the menus and that fine but then i got the firewire cable yesterday , plugged it in and it messed up, pc didnt recognise it either

Have you tried resetting it though? Have you been through every pointer on the apple website? Have you tried a different cable other than firewire? Try all of those and then contact apple!

i dont have another cable, the battery logo also comes on and then the ipod switches itself off even though i had it on charge all night
