Motorola will offer its products to consumers through robotic retail stores in a pilot program providing automated, on-demand retail solutions in key markets.
Motorola is testing this new automated vending format as a way to directly connect with consumers in places and at times where convenience is needed most. Leveraging small format robotic stores operated by Zoom Systems, the new retail option will be placed in high traffic locations giving consumers the immediate satisfaction of getting the products they need and want on demand.
"Continuing our effort to reinvent mobile retail culture and transform the consumer experience, this on-demand retail solution is an interesting approach to the many extensions of our retail strategy," said Jason Few, Corporate Vice President, Global Retail, Motorola. "This pilot program is an opportunity to bring never-seen-before convenience to consumers who are looking for ways to make life easier."
These robotic stores will be branded "INSTANTMOTO", and are expected to be deployed in approximately 20 locations nationwide from airports to malls by November 2006. The stores will house more than 25 Motorola products including carrier-ready MOTORAZR handsets, Bluetooth-enabled headsets, cordless phones, car chargers and more.

Yes, I can see that this will provide enormous benefits to the consumer.
'ayup love, I'm just nipping down the shop for some fags, do you want anything?'
'Ooooh yes darling, get a us pint of milk and a loaf of bread please. Oh, and don't forget the pink RAZR and car charger out of the machine will you? I'm gagging here!'
For god's sake, when does anybody feel the need to buy a phone so badly that they have to get one RIGHT NOW from a bloody vending machine?

Those vending machines are already popular in Japan (have been for a few years now) I can't see it taking off in this country, not for a while yet anyway.

They have to cut costs from all the returns of the razr..what better way than replace sales staff with vending machines... and customers can replace their faulty handsets faster.
