I've just had a Nokia 6600 apart to replace an ear speaker and give it a general clean up, and notice that it's joystick is actually mounted on the keypad membrane, NOT on the phone's mainboard! Look at the pictures below to see what I mean (actually taken with a K750i in macro mode!):
Note the lack of a joystick stuck on the mainboard, and that it's on the keypad membrane, the gold contacts at the bottom of the 6600 are where the keypad and joystick connect with the phone mainboard:

This is probably fairly old news to most people as the 6600's been out for the last 2 or 3 years, but I'm sure it would be quite easy for SE to implement a design like this. I may be a bit more rugged than designs like that on the K750 et al., it would also make replacing the joystick a damn site easier if it's simply on a board you can unscrew from the mainboard and screw a new one on, rather than having to de-solder the old joystick (being careful not to damage neighbouring compononts or melting them), then re-soldering a new one on!
Why didn't you think of this before SE?
