> N95 vs P990 (or more fittingly, P1000)
Bookmark topic
With all the delays, P990 is clearly outdated. I wonder how P1000 will compare to the N95.
I wonder if I should wait Q1 2007 for N95, and skip buying P990 now altogether.
N95:
5 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera (mechanical shutter),
integrated GPS,
802.11g WiFi,
HSDPA, UMTS, GPRS, EDGE
microSD,
160MB of internal memory
64 MB of RAM
"multimedia computer" (DVD like quality video)
2.6-inch QVGA screen
3D stereo speakers
full-on 3.5mm audio jack
mini-USB
99mm x 20mm x53mm (120g)
550 euro pricetag ($700 US)

To tell you the truth, I personally wouldn't bother with any Nokia S60 phone because the platform you simply isn't mature enough yet, added to the fact that Nokia phones are going downhill at the moment!.
I have had the N80 and the N73 in the past month. The N80 was a technically brilliant phone, but was let down by poor battery life, slow and clunky software and frequent crashes.
The N73 was a lot better but the phone had the annoying knack of switching off everytime I answered a call, which rendered the phone useless.
The N95 does look good but I would wait for 6 months after release before considering getting it, which I want I'm going to do.
In the mean time, I'm going to get the W850...

The phones are not direct competitors... Slightly different markets...
N95 = No touchscreen and no Qwerty = Any comparison would be subjective rather than objective...

I have to disagree on this one. I'm not sure about the N80 or E73, but I have an E70 and although the MP3 might not sound as nice and the pictures might not be as clear as the P990i, it is really a good phone. The E70 is faster than the P990i on opening applications. The Series 60 wifi implementation IMO is nicer than UIQ. I can connect a lot easier. There's more 3rd party software available compared to UIQ. While my P990i is a nice device, the device is disappointing because it's slow in a lot of areas. By the time the P1000 comes out it will be almost 2008 and most mobile would have moved on from there. I applaud Nokia for bringing in devices that are ahead of everyone else in the features department. SE P-series use to take that honour, but slowly Nokia is taking over. Unless the P1000 has got a 5mp camera with all the bells and whistles built in, with the speed up to par with current WM5 or Series 60 devices, it will be a long time before SE will catch up.

I also disagree with the s60 comments...upto now, ive owned seven nokia smartphones, right from the 7650 upward to the n80...all have been improved gradually, albeit, for some of them, in small area's...i never had a single fault with any of them, right upto the n80 (crap battery life...). The platform itself is certainly mature enough, and with the new n series, and with them, the extensive feature set, wifi, upnp, etc, them it will take time to get everything right...
simply dismissing the platform because you have experienced issues with the s60 handsets you have had isn't a valid point at all...
naturally, we will all experience issues with handsets over our lifetime, but again, one person's experience, isn't everyone else's...i also own a n73, and have had no issues at all with it...it simply is a fantastic handset..

Honestly, N95 seems the most interesting mobile phone iīve ever seen. It may not be touch screen or have a qwerty keyboard like p990i but the specs and the new slider design totally make up for that. A 5mpx cam already? A 16million color screen? GPS? And its smaller than N93, but does it have optical zoom?
N95 is really something. I only wish itīd arrive in my country at a cheaper price

.

will only produce a phone like that in early 2008 or maybe later.

only has one 3mpx phone till now and two smartphones, one is outdated (p990) and the other cant even be considered a media device ( no cam!!).
Itīll take a long time for

to come up with a portable multimedia computer like N95.
bye bye
I guess the new plans for īspecializedī phones with downgraded functions dont look so good now... at least not with the N series always years ahead.

some fair comments there, but to be fair, i dont think se will be playing catch up to nokia for too long, with regard's to heavily featured device's. You only have to look at the p990i..yes, it was extremely late to market from when it was announced, but it is still right up there with the top handsets..and, with firmware improvements, things can only get better...

just understand all the fuss about 5mp...people automaticaly mistake mp with quality all the time, generaly noobs about photography
i think n95 has other more impressive features, namely its specs vs size relation
anyway, i consider HTC devices to be much more a p series competion in the smarphone arena

I think the Gps is a nice idea too (at least for me as a hobby pilot). The handycam will certainly be a nice thing to have. As for the 'punch to size' ratio you are absolutely right - it makes the P990i look like a outdated brick
