Since my network does not support 2100 band for 3G, is there any reason I should keep the network selection automatically on both types of networks? Are there any advantages? Or is the 3G just eating the baterry? Do I get better GPRS speed with the 3G on?

As your netword doesn't support 3G, its no use, to leave the selection on dual-mode. It does cost battery time, because your phone will constantly be searching for 3G reception. It's better to select GSM/GPRS only.
