If you can't be bother to read this, which I probably wouldn't be, then I'm looking for a phone with a good email client that can run an IM app in the background - any suggestions welcome.

So, I'm looking for advise on a new phone. I've found in the past that Sony ericsson are pretty reliable and solid phones. I've been looking at the m600i, but I read about the various problems in a thread here so I'm unsure about that now.

Basically what I want out of a phone is good battery life (very important - 8800 is killing me), reliability - can't deal with the windows mobile crashes.. When I want to use my phone I want to be able to actually use it. I need to it to have a good email app that will run in the background with the option to check at a specified interval, messages should appear as sms messages do. I need an IM function, I don't mind if it's Jabber but directly to msn would be best, it also needs to run in the background, I need alerts for when a message is recieved.

I don't mind about the keypad, I can type well on all. I don't need a lot of internal memory, the option to use a memory card would be nice, but it isn't necessary. I don't need or really want a camera, umts would be nice, but again not required. It doesn't have to be a sony ericsson, but I am posting in a sony ericsson forum so I would expect most to be sony ericsson. I'm open to anything though.

I've been through their site and I don't really know which phone's will allow apps to run in the background, or what comes on them, very few review sites seem to cover email in their reviews, so I'm looking for hands on advise.. I know the M600i can run things in the background and would be good for email, so if nothing else fits I'll probably go for that and deal with the issues as they come about. Price isn't that important.

Thanks.

don't know about IM (don't use it at all), but the on-board e-mail
app on my 810i is pretty good - takes a little setting up but now
checks my aol account evcery 12 hours, my O2 and Orange UK
accounts every 3 hours and notifies me of new mail as a pop-up.

I did have a Moto PEBL that could do this but wasn't very reliable and lousy on battery.

Can you run apps in the background, for example if you run a game could you switch to something else, email for example, then go back to where you left off in the game?

Thanks for your reply.
