NTT doCoMo are currently working on a mobile with 5.1 surround sound !
So, cellphones these days come with integrated stereo speakers to keep you entertained during long commutes, but do they really need to pump out audio in anything more than stereo sound? Apparently, the good folks at NTT DoCoMo think so, as they are currently developing a prototype handset that supports digital radio in 5.1 channel surround sound. This news is bound to excite those who watch TV over their DMB-enabled handsets, but for people who live in areas without DMB networks, having 5.1 channel surround sound is as redundant as taking off one's pants to fart. These prototypes are currently on exhibition at CEATAC 2006.

wow 5.1 surround sound in mobile phones. We have a great future ahead of us. So what else can we expect.... A great number of people searching their entire household just to locate their fone when a call comes up thanks to the 5.1 surround sound technology.

But doesn't 5.1 sound rely on having a set of decent speakers distributed correctly around the room in order to get maximum effect? And said speakers should ideally be connected to a decent power amplifier?
I fail to see how a mobile phone can produce REAL 5.1 sound

It might do it technically but does it SOUND lik 5.1?

those so-called "surround" headphones can't really be compared with a dedicated 5.1 surround speaker set-up.
i really don't see the logic in having surround-sound phones. unless it acts as a receiver and you can connect 5 speakers and a subwoofer.

@zolo
Yes, I've heard of 5.1 through headphones and it's not very good to say the least!
