> Extra memory on SE phones

As we all have seen, the available memory is a HOT topic. I wonder how difficult would be for one to build a phone with expandable internal memory. You know, like the ones used in the laptops?!
As we heard lately, the phones are not called phones anymore, they are called "computers"; so why not add this function? The first thing I did once I got my new laptop was to go and get an extra 512 MB of RAM. Just unscrewed the screws, poped the RAM in and, just like that I doubled my RAM. This should be a no-brainer for the "few and proud SE engineers" that are building these state of the art phones. This way you get less anoyed customers, faster devices, and last but not least, one company could generate more revenue by selling these memory chips.
Or have the OS use the available memory from the phone or external card. Or just double the 60 MB to 120 MB. As simple as that....
My whole point is that the memory issue should be addressed as hardware issue. Bring more memory to the table by adding more hardware to the phone.
Hellow!!! Wake up engineers....

Well its quite obvious really.
They are running a business. A business survives through revenue and sustained profit margins. In order for them to do this, they need to be able to maintain a large turnover, be it vegetables or phones.
How would making a simple device expandable as you suggest be in their best interests long term? Wouldn't they rather have you purchase a new device than hold on to the one you currently have allowing you to exceed your typical usage and trends? Allowing for these devices to be "upgradable" will mean the turnaround for their stock will only fall and hence a huge drop in takings.
Its just not in their current financial model for obvious reasons and i doubt it will happen anytime soon, unless something fundamental was to change. Dont forget, these industries also depend on innovation and "expandable memory" isn't a clincher.

yes. wouldn't it be nice if memory could be upgraded especially for P990i.
then again if SE had spec it right & Symbain had delivered better memory management, we would not be screaming for more memory.

Ofcorse they could do it. But then i think they would sell the phone cheaper with small memory in the begining and you could buy some new piece of hardware as extra equipment that costed half the price of the phone. But then again you can be sure that you could buy non branded hardware and that would be the problem for the big companie's. So therfor i dont think they will do it.

But isn't that the core of what one would do in business.: "sell volumes cheaper than teh competition" ?!?! of course they could get a share from any memory manufacturer, and trade mark their own. and this will be another revenue avenue.
But the most important will be that the potential to atract more customers, and raise the brand awarness.
in today's world is all about customization. look at Apple and Microsoft. Even though Apple has better, nice loking products, they have such a small market share, while Microsoft built an empire. Apple has so few third party apps and hardware, and on top of that they are so expensive. don't get me wrong. I love the Macs and what they can do, but then again when I needed a mouse I had to research to see which is MAC compatible. We should not have to do that. It's a fricking mouse, hello!!! Somebody else said this is this forum that SE needs to get its marketing strategy and product engineers dogs back in re-training and up to speed on the reality.
But again, what do I know. I just buy their products

Nope. Never sell volumes cheaper than the competition. You just end up with a price war. You want to be at a competitive price (thereby making some money), but do it better and faster than everyone else, while being nice about it. hehe....
Customisation? Yes. it's why they have expandable slots to begin with. So people can decide how much and what they want on their phones. =)~
