I bought a mobile it say's INACTIVE SIM, a chap tells me its BARREDand that I cannot use it, I got back intouch with the seller and he say's it just wants unlocking, WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH ,and what should I do, ???
I'm an OAP I dont know much about mobiles ,I bought the mobile of a chap on ebay,but he cancelled the listing and sold it for a said price,I really could do with some GOOD advise .PLEASE.

Sounds like it's barred/blacllisted. You can try getting in touch with the seller and see if he will accept a return and refund you, it could well be it was sold in good faith. Though it could be he's pulling a fast one, I've had the odd problem with barred phones. They're not supposed to be sold on Ebay now, but IMHO it's made the problem worse as people are still selling the phones but either with 'signal problems' or just not saying that they're barred!

If you are getting the 'Inactive Sim' message that can mean it just needs unlocking.
I am sure there is a different message for block/barred handsets.
I would take it to carphonewarehouse and they will be able to unlock it for you for about £5/£10.
If that does not work and you bought the phone using Paypal, then log a complaint with them and tell the seller the phone is barred and you have had to contact the police unless, that is unless he refunds you straight away.
If your phone is barred then you are handling stolen goods and you may have no option but to contact the police.

Is the phone got a Vodafone ,Orange or T Mobile logo on it? R u using a matching PAYG sim card as well? If the phone got the operator logo on it then it was being locked and u need to unlock it. o2 contract phones are sim free and unlock but the PAYG one are lock too. Hope this help!

What type of phone is it that you have?
There is a way to find out whether the phone is locked or not and that is to enter the service menu on the handset itself.
Using the joystick/d-pad enter the following sequence:
Right, *, Left, Left, *, Left, * - (where * is the * button on your keypad)
Then scroll down to
Service Info
Then go to
Sim Lock and if you see a selection of locked padlock symbols then the phone is locked still.
If you see a row of unlocked padlock symbols then the phone is barred or you need a new sim.

If the phone just needed unlocking, it would come up with a message like 'Please insert correct sim card', and would refuse to let you into the main menus or anything and would not go past that screen. Can you go into the main menu, i.e. text messaging, settings, etc.?
If it's displaying 'inactive sim', either your sim card has expired (which they do if you've not made a chargeable (i.e. a call/text that takes your credit balance down) call or topped in usually 6 months. Or, sadly the phone has been barred. If this is the case then tell the seller that it does not just need unlocking but is barred and insist on a refund or you'll take it up with Ebay.
Edit: Some handsets (like the SE T610 do display 'invalid mobile' when barred, but some do also say 'inactive sim' as well.
Sorry to be giving some contradictory advice to others here, but I strongly suspect it is barred rather than just needing unlocking.
