Hi everyone. I have a T230 with 101x80 4096 color display and when i download images to my phone from PC with "SE image editor", each jpg picture eats about 17kB on phone memory, regardless of the original size of the image on PC.

However on my cousin's Nokia 6020 (or something i can't quite recall), the photos she takes with the VGA camera occupies around 25kB of memory space - 640x480 with 65k colors vs. 101x80 with 4096

And i remember hearing about this someplace, any ideas why this is the way it is?

nooooo, that can't be true. the size may not change on every phone. if i download a 20kb pic to my k750 and then i download the same picture onto another phone, the size must be the same.

or i misunderstood?

No you haven't misunderstood, that was what i meant.

Well, i remembered that as jpg files are decompressed into the memory prior to being viewed, they tend to keep much less space on disk than on memory.

In order to demonstrate, i tweaked with some jpeg images, resizing and decreasing colors, and uploading the files to the phone to check their sizes.

An image resized to 101x67 with 5k colors occupies 2.8 KB on disk and 20 KB on memory, needs 17 KB of phone memory once uploaded via "SE Image Editor".

The original of the resized image above (1000x667 pixels) has 64k colors, uses 92 KB on disk and 1.9 MB on memory, requires the same amount of T230 memory (17KB) as the resized one.

A photo taken by Nokia 6020, has 96.5k colors @640x480 and occupies 32.7KB on disk (This is the same size 6020 needs to keep this file), 900KB on PC memory, and 16 KB on my phone.

In conclusion, in 6020(Which has 2MB of memory), images seem to use the same amount of memory they do sitting compressed on PC hard drive, whereas on my T230 (with 1MB total), an image roughly the same size also on the PC needs a memory space similar to its decompressed size on PC.

The reason for this may be SE image editor software, as it is the only way to upload images onto the phone. And it only works one-way, you can not transfer files from the phone to PC. The photo taken by 6020 was transferred to a Nokia 6600 via IR, then BlueTooth'ed to PC, as there was no cable available to connect 6020 to computer (don't know if there ever is?). I must also note that "Image Editor" couldn't directly use the 6020 photo, i had to re-save the image with the computer.

Can anyone please check these sizes an image consumes on phone and on PC? Thanks.

it hapens, when i send a image from my phone to my dads t616. In my phone occupy 35kb and on his phones it's about 48kb

Weird isn't it?

In my case it's even more drastic than that. A 101x80 image needs 3kB on PC and 17kB on my phone. I guess the T230 uses its memory only as a storage space and can not allocate it dynamically to compress - decompress jpg files? Any ideas?

PS. machuca_622, what model is your phone (w800)? Was the image you sent to your father's phone kept on your memory stick, or on the internal memory?

I think it has to do with the minimum memoryblocksize. I suppose it's 16KB. Anything smaller wil take up at least 16KB. A file of 17KB will take up 32KB. This also explains machuca_622's 35,7KB taking up 48KB (3x16). I noticed this memorymanagement first with my old Ericsson T68.

This makes sense.

I just sent a plain black image to the fone, and it needs 400bytes of memory space?? Tried some gray scale also, these images occupy around 7kBytes.

Man, this is really getting on my nerves, not because i want to store many pics in the fone, but because i can't really understand why this is so!

Tranced, thanks for the reply. I see, but its just that Nokia 6020 could store more images with the same attributes, on the same amount of memory space.

But i can see that this is not a commonplace problem among SE phones. I wonder how this is in the newer low-end SE models?
