struggling on with my P990, trying to get it to work....

installded Swiss mgr, can see I have RAM free 5,8mb (9%), just restarted and have no apps working.

is it really true I only have 9% free of my RAM, if so no wonder the machine is buggy?

Startup ram is usually 12.2mb - 15.6mb. Swiss manager takes the percent from the 64mb of the internal ram, that is why the percent is so low.

Well, yes, but if you use swiss manager properly, you can avoid restarting the phone for like a week, which is very good.

UIQ and Symbian OS are sooooooo stupid in choosing the memory handling like they did. Dynamic memory handling for ram like the pocketpc 2000 would have been 10 times better. Say that you have 40mb free in the c: drive, the phone would then take say 80% of it, or 32mb for ram. This is 3 times what the phone currently has......:S

Well, I am just wondering why SE chose to go backward for their UIQ 3 devices, when their P910i has for so long ( 2 years in actual fact) handles memory management so effiiciently (easily keeps 20 applications running in the background all the time without the need for the OS to kill any of them). Even Windows Mobile 5 devices like TyTN are following suit P910i in terms of the type memory chips to use which makes WM5 devices much better for multitasking than any UIQ 3 devices...

Hi Johnex, honestly, the problem lies on SE, Symbian and UIQ which cripples the P990i's full potential... the memory management is horrible to say the least and with only a max of 15MB available at boot time, we truly cannot multitask much My P910i lasted me at least 1 full month with an almost unlimited capacity of allowing me to open up as many applications as I want and keep them all running in the background 24/7.

My P990i? Huh... even with SM, can never last me 2 days I've read thru some NK forums and noticed most of their S60 3rd edition devices are having at least 22MB - 25MB at boot time... Judging by the memory requirements of UIQ 3 devices, the P990i needed at least 32MB at boot time to do some decent mutitasking stuff...

you are way to ambitious...i figure something like 20mb at start would be decent, from what i need in the phone...it wold be enough to run swiss, opera and 3 or 4 more apps. People are saying w950 has over 19 in the first fw, and m600 is close, at least they should put the p990 at this level

I alway had the impression that symbian applications are much smaller in footprint than windows mobile application. But in P990, the footprint seems huge.

IMO, P990 should have been spec-ed with higher ram and it would have been a much better phone.

SK manager or SK manager pro are an essential app on the P990i at the mo IMHO.
