It seems like u are dialing the wrong data account. Try dialing these numbers *99***2#, *99***3#, *99***4#, *99***5# . The number corresponds to the data account ID on the phone...

Also confirm if the work ofline option is unchecked in Ur browser.
Another thing U could do is try using some non browser application 2 connect 2 the net...something like a download manager which don't go through IE proxy confrigation & directly connect 2 the net...may be some multiplayer game...that is not *ahem* downloaded from a file housting server or bought 4m the streetside vendor 4 Rs.100
U know what I mean.

Hi u all, thanks for the responses.I got it resolved a couple days back(surprisingly, another airtel customer care executive could give me the solution).this is what i did.
1)created a new gprs connection(under Connectivity>Data Comm) with a new name and entered the same set of details like APN...
2)A new external ID(like 1,2 and so on) got generated, noted it down.
3)created a new internet profile(Connectivity>Internet Profiles)and selected the newly created internet settling name from the list and saved.
4)In dial up networking, the number to dial was changed to
*99***2*1#
where 2 was the external id in the mobile for the internet setting in use.
5)dialled...yes,this time it got connected....
but now the issue is with the Outlook express configuration of Gmail on the laptop.
I've used Gmail auto mail configurator.
I'm able to receive mails but not send.
Both incoming and server settings done.
the settings have all been checked, but it throws the error that no outgoingserver has been configured.whereas i've set up all this already...
plz give me some clue as to why is this happening...
Thanks

While configuring outgoing mail server for Gmail, you must use authentication and ssl . Port must be 465. Also the username must be in
name@Gmail.com format. If none of these work, then i think ur laptop is missing a ssl certificate signed by verisign which is needed by Gmail for sending mail.
