Hey, a long title i know but its took me best part of 10 minutes to get on here. My internet status is telling me that it hasn't sent any packets, but has sent nearly 150,000! I cant open pages and if i can, the pictures display the 'Page cannot be displayed sign. I can only see text and i cant log onto msn messenger. WTF is going on? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks

Ps. I've been trying to send this since five past ten 10!
Thanks christ! its on!

Starting with the obvious, have you scanned for viruses, adware, spyware etc? And I mean properly, one anti-spyware app isn't enough, I run two or three, sometimes even four different ones. Also check that there's nothing running in the background that could be using your bandwidth, like Limewire or a bittorrent client. Many of these start automatically when you switch the PC on.

After that, try this lttle app (if you can download it of course!):

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Download it, run it and click the 'fix' button.

Next thing I'd try would be (if possible) to connect the computer to the router via an ethernet cable to eliminate the possibility of a wireless connectivity problem.

If none of those work, the best thing would be to try a different computer with the wireles and / or wired network. Grab a friend with a laptop or PSP and see if that works OK. Then you'll know that it's definately a problem with your computer and not the router, telephone line, or your ISP.

If it turns out to be your computer at fault and you're sure it's not virus or spyware related, then a reinstall of windows could be in order The only other possibility is a faulty wireless adapter and / or ethernet adapter, both of which are not very likely.

Diagnosing faults like this without being able to see your computer is difficult to say the least, so appologies if you've already tried some of those suggestions Hopefully, the problem might turn out to be something simple

Right, you've lost me here How can there be 0 packets sent but 20,000 or whatever packets sent? What application are you using to measure this network usage?

I know that you have a fresh windows install but it sounds like some kind of spyware, even so 0 packets sent sounds very weird

edit: is there any way you could connect to your dsl directly to see if you have the same error?

I'm thinking along similar lines too. Do you use pop email (outlook, outlook express etc.)? Does that work ok?
