> P990i Was it really worth the wait ?
Bookmark topic
Having used virtually all the various platforms ie symbian palm pocket pc etc I decided to ditch my tytn and opt for the latest offering from Sony Ericsson.
I have always been impressed with the 'P' series having owned the P800/P900/P910i I thought that the P990i was definitely the phone to blow the current pocket pc blues well and truly away.
Having spent three weeks tweaking and tuning the device (given the limited software for UIQ 3) I have now decided to go back to my windows mobile 5 device. This wasn't an easy decision. I yearned for the 'proper' mobile keypad and I always found the symbian os much more user friendly in the same way as the palm os ie Treo 650.
Before you guys tell me that the P990i is a phone/pda and not a pda/phone I wish to point out the following:
The P990i has got to be the slowest handset of its type ever to hit the market.
Despite the usual rom upgrade the using the 'swiss tools' utility I have never experienced so many error messages since I was blessed with owning the 'Jasjar'.
At least the WM5 devices were released quite quickly (and without extensive testing it would appear) so I can understand to some extent the problems we have all experienced.
I'm puzzled that given the protracted delays associated with the P990i I half expected a fully usable device). I can now see why networks like Orange and T-Mobile have held back their respective launch dates to carry out more beta testing)
In my opinion the P990i is seriously flawed as a data tool due to its limited rom capacity. The rom update in no way addresses the serious issues with the device and consequently I'm not sure the P990i will ever replace the P910i given the vastly improved spec.
Sony Ericsson ......What on earth has happened !!!

i'm very much agreed with u mate! after the wait, it wasnt the handset that i expected, though i still wanted it. on the other hand, i'm quite comfortable with the switch i made frm my tmobile MDApro. having said that, there are plenty of rooms that need to be worked on for sony, and i start losing my confidence if this will ever work eventually. M600 has a better memory management IMO. to sum up, it's just because of my fanatism of the P series that probably make me hang on to it.

i am satisfied with the p990i.
... probably because i didn't expect much from it.
i had a p800 before and i was very happy with it being one of the first smartphones around at that time. the p900 and the p910i came but still i waited for the next model (which became the p990i) because i thought that the changes for the p series were not enough to force me to switch to the newer models. they changed the looks and upgraded the system, but it still had the same functions as the p800. but the p990i is a different story.
now we all know about the p990i's wifi and 3g technology capabilities. these alone convinced me that the p990i was going to be my next smartphone. but i also knew that it won't be very much different from its previous models. i think the name says it all- they called it a p990i... and not a p1000 or something.
yes... the p990i does not claim itself to be bug-free and i hope that sony ericsson fixes its problems soon. but i like the newest member of the p-series just because of the 3g and wifi.
i'd just like to add that i was a bit disappointed with the design of the p990i. a smoother and cleaner design would have been better than the "clunky" look. i can't imagine how a benq smartphone would be able to look better than a snoy ericsson smartphone.
... imagine the p990i with a keypad like that of a motokrzr:
... and a flip off look similar to this or a m600:

A phone that reboots itself whilst it's not even in use? Worth the wait? Hell yes! No longer do I need to reboot my phone 3 times a day! My new P990i does it all by itself! Talk about innovation!
No, but really, I have found a way to stop all of the crashes and general bugginess - turn it off, put it in the box, and stick it on ebay for some other poor bastard to buy.

The "poor bastard" might know how to do and upgrade, and end up with a great phone cheap

And you will make someone very happy

silentparty you are absolutely right chap. the P990i is probably the worst smartphone for bugs ever released .
How anyone can put up with it long term is beyond me. You only need to check the other smartphones available to confirm this.
I'm the most patient user when it comes to perseverance but the P990i is completely flawed.
I now know why the UK networks are being so cautious with its release(apart from vodaphone).
A rep from Orange to me that they are expecting as much as 40% to be returned within the first 2 weeks of contract signature.
Sony Ericsson P990i.......... R.I.P.

Well, I think it was worth the wait, and im very happy with it and glad I did wait to get it

I cannot think of a comparable device that has this degree of flexibility.

I really want to like the P990i but it is totally and utterly screwed up!
E32USER-CBase errors every other minute, Just looking at the phones screen causes it to reboot for better performance.
But better performance for what? better crashes the next time i want to send a text message!
Oh how the mighty SE have fallen. I want my SPV M3100 back!

2 questions @BlackBauer24:
- do you have the latest firmware?
- are u using SMPro?
If not, I suggest you look into these two options. It will GREATLY improve the phone's stability.
